teddy bear - Writer's/Director's Notes
Whenever people ask me what my film is about, I pause, cringe and answer with carefully chosen words. I politely describe teddy bear as a psychological drama about a serial killer trying to contain his immediate urges. I'm afraid I'll come off as another filmmaker trying to make his mark as a slasher/horror director. Not that there is anything wrong with that…
teddy bear is not a horror film and it's not quite a thriller. Don't get me
wrong, it's suspenseful and scary at times, but mostly it's a study of a man conflicted with who he is and why he does what he does.
The reaction from people to the subject is quite enthusiastic especially the younger crowd. They seem naturally curious about what is lurking inside the mind of a man struggling with the chronic compulsion to sexually assault women and kill them. Can he be identified in advance? Just how normal is his life? How does he relate to the people he meets? Is he a victim himself or just a monster?
For six months, I researched the topic and discovered that although there are different types of serial killers, most of them have common traits, and based on these, I started to outline the character of Ben Corisky.
The film teddy bear came about because of my "immediate urge" to make a small film. I was determined to prove to myself that if I adhered to the three basic ingredients of a good film - an interesting relationship dynamic, taut dialogue and a compelling story, I could engage the audience without breaking the bank.
I am confident that my tips on scriptwriting will not only help writers enhance the quality of their current project but also help them become self reliant and consistent with their future work.
